Your environment has a lot to do with your ability to succeed. Unconvinced? Take a moment to imagine the following two environments:
- A dimly lit room, cluttered with garbage and knickknacks. A strong smell wafts from a half-finished carton of takeout. The curtains are dark and dusty, preventing the sun from shining through the window. The air is stale and uncirculated.
- A bright, well-lit room, tidy and free of clutter. A window is cracked open, letting in fresh air and a light breeze. The sun shines through the light curtains, bathing the room in a warm, inviting glow.
Which of these environments do you think is most conducive to your ability to succeed?
Consider Your Surroundings
If you want to design your environment for success, start by designating one area that will be your primary work area. It can be as small or as large as you’d like; the important thing is that when you’re in this area, your mindset is to get things done.
Next, clear your work area from as many distractions as possible. Remove clutter and garbage, and avoid anything that tends to catch your attention when you’re working. Remember, it’s up to you to decide what will and won’t distract you. For example, some people do their best work when there’s music in the background, and others just can’t resist the urge to belt out their favorite song rather than buckling down to work. The important thing is to find what works best for you.
Finally, be sure to keep your work area well-lit. Dim lighting will make it harder for you to concentrate. Natural lighting is ideal, so open the curtains if your work area has a window. If not, make sure that your lights are turned on. As you experiment with your surroundings, you’ll soon find it easy to recognize the ideal conditions for success.
Choose Positive People
The other important part of your environment in regards to your success is the people you choose to associate with. The people around you have a huge influence on your level of success, whether or not you realize it. When you surround yourself with positive people who want to see you succeed, your goals will be much easier to reach.
Be sure to treat the people in your life with respect, because the impact they’ll have on your success deserves kindness in return. And don’t forget to do your part and encourage the people around you to succeed, as well.
Your environment plays a huge role in your level of success, so we encourage you to take the time to design your environment to give you the best possible chance to achieve great things.
