Time to Get Heart Healthy

It’s time for a pop quiz, Yoli Nation! What’s the leading cause of death in America?

Cancer? No.

Car accidents? Nope.

Heart disease? Ding ding ding! We (unfortunately) have a winner. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women by a considerable margin. That’s why now is the time to get heart healthy!

Why now?

Now is the best time to get heart healthy for a few reasons. The first reason is obvious: when you take care of your heart health, you’ll feel better. Your heart won’t have to work so hard to pump blood throughout your body, making everything you do much easier.

Another reason to start now is that you don’t want to continue bad habits that could damage your heart health further. Changing your lifestyle to promote good heart health will start helping you immediately, so don’t put it off until later!

What can you do?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a cure-all for heart disease. But by adopting the following habits, you can work to take care of your heart health!

  • Maintain a healthy body weight. Learn how the BBS can help you do so here.
  • Eat healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids (found in Omegas), monounsaturated fat, and polyunsaturated fat. Avoid unhealthy fats such as saturated and trans fats.
  • Get enough sleep. Rest is an important part of your cardiovascular health. Adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night, so do your best to fall within this window.
  • If you smoke, quit. In addition to the well-known damage smoking does to the lungs, smoking can also damage your heart.
  • Your heart is a muscle, and just like your other muscles, exercise will help your heart get stronger. Experts recommend getting 90 to 180 minutes of physical activity each week.
  • Check in with your doctor regularly. Routine check-ups with a physician allow you to consistently monitor your heart health, and in addition to looking for potential problems, your doctor can make lifestyle recommendations to help you work toward optimal health.

Taking care of your heart health is incredibly important, so we encourage you to do everything you can to support your cardiovascular system. For more tips for living a healthy lifestyle, subscribe to the blog below and check out our Facebook page!
