The Problem with Being Inactive

Did you know that health professionals recommend doing between 90 and 180 minutes of moderate physical activity each week? While many people exercise to lose weight, there are a lot of other reasons that you should be engaging in physical activity on a regular basis!

Problems with Inactivity

Being inactive may seem pretty innocuous, but it can have a devastating effect on your health. In fact, the World Health Organization has identified inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality!

Inactivity is a risk factor for many health issues, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Obesity
  • Depression and anxiety

Benefits of Physical Activity

The good news is that adding some physical activity to your day can have an incredible impact on your health in a short amount of time.

Regular physical activity can:

  • Strengthen bones and muscles
  • Aid in weight control
  • Improve balance
  • Reduce the risk of Type-II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and obesity
  • Improve mental health

Finding an Activity You Enjoy

The best physical activity is one that you can see yourself doing long-term. When you enjoy what you’re doing, you’re much more likely to stick with it. If you love running, that’s great. If you hate it, try something else! There are so many physical activities to try, and you’re sure to find something that you love.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Walking
  • Running
  • Biking
  • Swimming
  • Dancing
  • Yoga

Once you find an activity that you enjoy, make it a part of your weekly routine. Don’t be afraid to try more than one!

Inactivity can lead to serious problems with your health, so we encourage you to add some physical activity to your day. For more tips for staying healthy, subscribe to the blog below and check out our Facebook page!
