If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll know that all aspects of your health are important to us. This includes, physical, mental, and financial. But an often overlooked aspect of our health, is our social health. Let’s take a look at what social health is, why it’s important, and what we can do to improve it.
WHAT IS SOCIAL HEALTH?
Social health is essentially your ability to form meaningful relationships with other people in healthy and positive ways. This can apply to how you interact with people, how you communicate, and the way you form bonds. Remember, your shyness doesn’t affect your social health. It’s all about the bonds you currently have formed, and how you form new ones in healthy ways.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Social health is important for a multitude of reasons. When you have a solid support system, someone to laugh with, and someone to help you when you need it, stress levels can decrease. Having good social health can also give us a sense of purpose, as it allows us to feel needed and loved by others.
Poor social health can cause a lot of underlying issues. When we feel isolated or lonely, this can lead to anxiety, depression, and more. So, it’s important to practice good social health. And if you are struggling, start small! The tiniest things can make huge differences when it comes to your social health.
HOW CAN IT BE IMPROVED?
Here are some tips on how to improve your social health. Remember, all it takes is one step at a time!
- If you’re waiting in line at the coffee shop or grocery store, say hi to the person behind you and ask them about their day. This can help you be more comfortable with initiating interactions.
- Instead of waiting for your friend to message you first, send them the first message! They may have been waiting for the exact same thing. Don’t leave them hanging.
- Join a club or support group that shares your interests and needs. This is a great way to meet people who have things in common with you.
- Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. Authenticity is an important part of good social health. Don’t change who you are for anyone!
