Benefits of Staying Active

For this week’s BBR challenge, we’d like you to walk thirty minutes every day and share a picture with us on our contest post here. We chose walking for this challenge because it’s a great way to be physically active and work toward optimal health.

Here are some of the many benefits of being physically active!

Weight Management

While your diet plays the biggest role in weight management, regular physical activity can also contribute. Working out burns calories, which will help you maintain a healthy weight. It also increases your lean muscle tissue, which helps boost your metabolism!

Cardiovascular Health

A sedentary lifestyle is considered one of the five major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Your heart is a muscle, and it gets stronger and more effective at pumping blood throughout your body when you’re physically active. According to the American Heart Association, thirty minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week is enough to benefit your cardiovascular health.

Bones and Muscles

Strengthening your muscles is one of the most obvious benefits of regular physical activity, and your bones will also benefit. In turn, keeping your bones and muscles strong will make it easier for you to do the things you love.

Exercise can have a powerful impact on your mood. Research has shown that provided you do it in a healthy manner, exercise can improve your mood not just during exercise, but after you’ve completed your workout. It can also improve your self-esteem and body image, so it can be great for your emotional health.

Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night to function at their best. If you want to improve your sleep, being more physically active can help you get it done. According to this poll conducted by the National Sleep Association, regular exercisers report better sleep quality, regardless of the time of the day workouts take place!
