Most of us are familiar with the most well-known ways to take care of your health: eating a healthy diet, being physically active, and getting enough sleep at night. But there are a lot of ways to take care of your health that may not seem obvious at first. Today we’re going to talk about a habit that can have a big impact on your health: embracing mindfulness!
What is Mindfulness?
Do you ever find yourself just going through the motions? Maybe you hop in your car to go to work and arrive with absolutely no memory of the drive there. Maybe you’ve been staring at the same page in a book for ten minutes without absorbing any of it. Maybe you’re in the middle of a conversation and realize that you have no idea what the other person just said. No matter how it manifests itself, it’s not always easy to be fully present in your day-to-day life.
That’s where mindfulness comes in. Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment and giving your attention to what is happening around you!
One of the most important times to be mindful and present is when you’re eating. It’s easy to find yourself overeating when you’re not paying attention to what you’re doing. If you’ve ever been watching a movie and downed a whole bowl of popcorn without even noticing, you know what we’re talking about!
Fortunately, mindful eating is pretty easy to pick up! Practice focusing on your food rather than your surroundings. Avoid distractions such as watching TV or looking at your phone while you’re eating. You’ll be more in tune with how full you are, and as a bonus, it’s a much more enjoyable experience because you’ll actually appreciate your food!
Mindfulness isn’t just for eating. Being more mindful during your daily life will help you be more engaged with the world around you and more in tune with your physical and emotional wellbeing.
One of the best ways you can be more mindful is to spend less time using your phone and other devices. While there are a lot of great things about them, they can also be a big distraction. When you can put them away, do so. It may feel strange at first, but you’ll soon appreciate having some time away from them!
Mediation is another great way to be more mindful. If you’ve never meditated, don’t be intimidated! There are a lot of apps and websites that will guide you through meditation. You may be surprised how much you enjoy it!
Mindfulness is a great way to be more present in your day-to-day life, so we encourage you to embrace it. For more tips for living a happy, healthy life, subscribe to the blog and check out our Facebook page!
