Exercise is an important part of optimal health. In addition to helping you maintain a healthy weight, it has a positive impact on everything from your cardiovascular system to your immune system. That’s why we recommend working out for 30-45 minutes three to five times each week!

Of course, it’s much easier to make exercise a consistent habit when you find the right workout for you. Here is your guide to finding your ideal workout!

Determine what you want to accomplish.

The first step in finding your ideal workout is determining what you want to accomplish. Different exercises affect your body in different ways, so considering your goals is an important part of finding the right workout for you. For example, if you want to gain muscle, strength-training might be a more valuable option than running. By taking your goals into account, you’ll be able to find a workout that will help you reach them!

Find something that you like doing.

Unless you’re a professional athlete honing your skills for a specific event, the best workout is the one you’ll stick with. And the workout you’ll stick with is the workout that you like doing! After all, if you hate running, how much willpower do you think you’ll have when it’s cold and rainy outside and everything inside of you is screaming to stay curled up in bed? Not much!

You’re most likely to consistently exercise when you find something that makes you excited to get after it, so don’t be afraid to experiment to find what you like. There are a lot of great ways to work out. Try a few and find the one that works best way for you!

Ease yourself into it.

While it’s tempting to dive headfirst into a new fitness routine, working out too hard too fast can thwart even the best intentions to create a long-lasting habit. Make sure you choose an exercise that you can scale to your ability level to avoid injury or burnout.

You can scale a lot of exercises yourself, such as running. Classes, on the other hand, may require a bit of research. For example, advanced yoga is going to be too difficult for someone who has never been to a class before, but a beginner class might be perfect. Talk to the instructor before signing up for a class to make sure it fits your ability level!

Challenge yourself.

We know we just said to ease yourself into it, but make sure you’re also challenging yourself a little bit! It’s easy to become complacent in your workouts, but when you stop challenging yourself, your progress also stalls. Strive to improve consistently and set goals that will push you!
