When life gets hard, it can make it more difficult to prioritize our own needs and wants. We may justify this by saying that other people need more help, or that we’ll take care of ourselves when we have more time. But sometimes, that extra time never comes. Today we’re going to talk about how to make yourself a priority.
One of the best ways to make yourself a priority is by learning how to say no. Not necessarily to everything, of course! But, if you already have a lot on your plate and are being asked to do more, it’s okay to decline. Stretching yourself too thin and not taking time for yourself is a recipe for disaster.
Remember, when you’re saying no, you don’t need to give any excuses or reasons. Simply say no and continue with your day. If anyone has a problem with it, they aren’t being respectful of your boundaries or needs. While it’s good to say yes sometimes, you should never need to have a reason to say no.
LISTEN TO YOUR OWN NEEDS
Check in with yourself as often as you need to and make sure you’re fulfilling your own needs and wants. This can be done in a couple of different ways. Answering the same questions each time, journaling, or talking it out with someone who cares about you are just a few. Here are some good questions that will help ensure that you’re making yourself a priority:
- What do I currently have on my plate?
- Do I want to be taking on anything else right now?
- When can I take some time for myself this week?
- How am I feeling physically, emotionally, and spiritually?
All of these questions (and any others you would like to ask) are great ways to check in with yourself and your well-being.
TAKE SOME ALONE TIME
Taking some time to be alone is a great way to make yourself a priority. This limits distractions and can help you accomplish what will be the best for you. Have your spouse wrangle the kids for an hour or two while you sit down with your favorite book or podcast. If that isn’t an option, send the kids out to play while you make dinner or take a bath. Even if it’s rare, having alone time is a great way to prioritize your needs.
Making yourself isn’t always easy, but it’s very important for your long term health. For more tips, subscribe to the blog and check out our Facebook page.
