Why Protein?

Protein is incredibly important to your health. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues and make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. It’s also the building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood.

In addition to the foundational role of protein, it also plays a big role in weight management. It helps your body build and maintain lean muscle, which helps you maintain a healthy metabolism. It also helps you feel fuller longer. And unlike fat and carbohydrates, which your body can store for later, you can’t store protein. There’s no back-up reserve. That’s why it’s so important to get enough protein from your food every day!

Protein Recommendations

In accordance with the Institute of Medicine’s recommendations, we recommend eating about half of your body weight in grams of protein each day. That means if you weigh 150 pounds, you should eat about 75 grams of protein every day.

To get enough protein, you’ll want to pay close attention to what you’re eating and track your protein intake. There are a lot of foods that are lean and high in protein, so choose those as often as possible. Good examples of lean protein snacks are chicken, turkey, eggs, seafood, Greek yogurt, and nuts. You can find a list of suggested protein snacks in your BBS brochure. You can also find suggestions here, here, and here. And, of course, our whey protein shake, YES, will also help you reach your protein requirements!
