Surprising Sources of Sugar

Cutting back on sugar can be a great decision for your health. Unfortunately, sugar can be sneaky. You probably wouldn’t be blown away if someone told you that a slice of cake was packed with sugar, but the following foods may surprise you!

Condiments

Condiments may seem like a harmless addition to a meal, but it’s important to consider how much sugar you’re adding. A tablespoon of ketchup can contain almost 4 grams of sugar, and sweet relish contains 4.4 grams per tablespoon. And let’s not forget salad dressings, which can take a healthy bowl of greens and lean protein and turn it into a much less healthy meal. Read the nutrition facts and look for options that are low in added sugars!

Sauces

Even savory sauces can pack a sugary punch. Tomato sauce may not seem like a big source of sugar, but some brands contain up to 10 grams of sugar per cup. Barbecue sauce can contain 6 grams of sugar per tablespoon. Teriyaki sauce, sriracha, and hoisin sauce are also common culprits. Look for options that are free from added sugars or try making your own!

Yogurt

Yogurt can be a great choice as you work to transform your life, but it’s important to pay attention to the nutrition facts. Some kinds of yogurt, especially flavored yogurts and yogurts with mix-ins, can contain anywhere from 15-25 grams of sugar. Fortunately, there a lot of great options out there. Greek yogurt tends to have less sugar, and a lot of brands will have no sugar added options. Pick these, and you’ll be just fine!

Protein Bars

A healthy, nutritious protein bar can be a good option when you’re on-the-go, but not all protein bars are created equal. Many of them have as much sugar as a candy bar. Look for a protein bar that has plenty of protein with little sugar, and look through the ingredient list to make sure you’re comfortable with what you’re eating.

Drinks

Food isn’t the only thing you need to consider. Drinks can be packed with sugar! Soda may seem like an obvious example, but specialty coffee drinks, fruit juices (even the ones made with 100% fruit juice), smoothies, and other drinks can sabotage your efforts to cut back on sugar. Stick with water and your favorite Yoli drinks, which are sweetened with stevia rather than sugar!
